It Could Be an Addiction!

OH REALLY?! Can this be bad for my health??

Now, tell me something I don’t know. I heard this on the local NBC affiliate on the evening news tonight. You’d have to be living under a rock or in a part of the world where there is no electricity, no cell phone coverage, no access to news papers or magazines not to know how addictive the online world can be. And surely you haven’t been around JTV very long if you aren’t addicted. Things are changing now and I am not nearly as plugged in as I was even just 60 days ago, but I could still use help breaking free.


Another thing we were told is that something appears to attract people to go online and they, “don’t immediately understand what it is,” but that there are some people that are online 8 – 10 hours a day! Whoa! Eight to ten hours a day? Ok, so sarcasm aside, there are plenty of jobs where you are online as part of the job and approximately 8 hours would be the norm. It was for me.


Tonight was a classic meal — Chicken with Mushrooms and Red Wine and Saffron Risotto with a Salad

Then I’d come home and take care of more work in the evening or get online and relax with the help of the digital world.


The Center for Internet Addiction reports that approximately 5% – 10% of the population is addicted to the web. Now I’m no mathematician, but I do know that it’s not difficult to make statistics validate an assumption. What I’d like to know is what population was studied? Is this the entire population of the USA? Is this a segment of the population based on age? Should people over a certain age and below a certain age be included in the calculation? Were there more male or female participants and how about married or partnered vs. single and of those that are single, widows/widowers or divorced?


I realize I am making this more complicated than most would like, but we long ago established that I am a curious one and I like definitive answers. Black and white is better for me than gray.

The center has posted a test that we can take so of course I wanted to see what results I could come up with.

Well, no surprise here. I know I’m addicted and I know I have a compulsive personality. I only quit smoking 11 months ago and I eat too much and when I get started with something I enjoy, like knitting or reading or … writing! I am not easily stopped, but what do they suggest we, the addicted, do about this? The internet is not only offers immediate communication with others, but fun and entertainment and help with personal and professional productivity are all benefits of the technology and let’s not forget education.


There is so much information at our fingertips that it’s difficult to believe that just 15 years ago we were using such primitive methods to acquire information — the Library, Radio, Newspapers, Magazines, Television, etc.

Take the test and see where you fall and what the recommendations are for you, but I’d wager a bet that it’s all info you have either thought of on your own or have read about before. Nothing new here. If you find something that helps you break away from all of this, can you please let me know?

Chicken with Cremini Mushrooms and Red Wine

  • 4 boneless, skilness chicken breast halves, lightly pounded to an even thickness
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
  • 1/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3/4 lb. cremini mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped shallots
  • 1/2 cup red wine or Marsala
  • 1/2 cup chicken stock
  • 2 tablespoons chicken demi-glace

Season the chicken breasts with salt and pepper. Put the flour in a bowl and dredge the chicken in the flour, shaking off any excess.

In a large fry pan over medium-high heat, warm the oil. Place the chicken breasts in the pan and cook, turning once, until lightly browned on both sides and barely firm when pressed in the centers, 6 – 8 minutes. Transfer the chicken to a warmed plate and cover loosley with aluminum foil.

In the same pan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the mushrooms and cook, stirring occasionally, until they give off their liquid and it evaporates, about 6 minutes. Stirn in the shallot and cook until softened, about 2 minutes. Stir in the wine, increase the heat to medium-high and boil for 30 seconds. Add the stock and demi-glace and return to a boil, stirring to incorporate.

Return the chicken to the pan and turn to coat with the sauce. Reduce the heat to low and simmer utnil the sauce is thickened, about 2 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

Saffron Risotto

  • 3 cups chicken broth
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 small onion
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 1/2 cups Aborio rice
  • 1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup dry white wine
  • 1/4 teaspoon crumbled saffron threads

In a saucepa, bring broth and water to a simmer and keep at a bare simmer.

Finely chop onion in a 2 1/2 quart heavy saucepan cook in 2 tablespoons butter over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until softened. Add rice, stirring to coat with butter. Add 1 cup simmering broth mixture and cook, storring constnatly and keeping at a simmer, until absorbed. Continue cooking at a simmer and adding broth mixture, about 1/2 cup at a time, stirring constantly and letting each addition be absorbed before adding next, until recie is tender and creamy-looking but still al dente, about 18 minutes total. (There may be broth mixture left over.) Stir in Parmesan, wine, saffron, remaining tablespoons butter, salt and pepper to taste and cook over low heat until heated through, about 3 minutes.

    You are an average on-line user. You may surf the Web a bit too long at times, but you have control over your usage.

    I’m not as bad as I thought.

    It is time consuming. But I used to read books all the time before the internet. I still do, but not as much since the net.

    I think if the net is used for junk. Like constant game playing or porn, then it can become an addiction. But it is educational if used the right way. Just like books were!

  2. Yes Sumdance, I guess I’d have to agree. My problem is that it’s made my attention span dwindle. An ad catches my attention or a blurb about a current event and I’m clicking away. I may be reading something and want to get more information so I leave an article and hunt something down and am off on another subject. At least when I was spending 8 – 10 hours a day banging away at the computer for work I was more productive. 🙂
